Biola Kudus — Professional Boxer
Portsmouth boxer Biola Kudus approached us at Team Locals Media in 2014 to design the poster for his debut pro fight. I gave it the appropriate amount of distortion and destruction, featured Biola prominently, and threw the Spinnaker Tower and HMS Warrior in the background to honour Biola's pride in his city.
When Biola got in touch again a few months later to create a poster for his second pro fight, I kinda went crazy. Adobe CC became less of a software suite and more of a flamethrower as I burned up the text with wisps of fire and red-hot colors, and filled the background with explosions. And a destroyer. And a helicopter. And missiles.
For the third poster, I took inspiration from more traditional boxing posters of yesterdecades — neater, more linear, but still featuring a nod to Portsmouth with a silhouette of the Spinnaker Tower.
I was going through an 80s phase
The night I first sat down to design the poster for Biola's third pro fight, I was in the midst of a deep Ready Player One-inspired 80s phase. Playlists filled with the cheesiest hit songs. Nostalgic sci-fi movie binges. The whole shebang. When I woke up the next morning, this had happened:
I like to believe there's an alternative reality where we went forward with this.
